Online Spiritual Book Study Retreat: “The Story of a Soul”

In this time of isolation, we find ourselves separated, at least physically, from our family, friends, coworkers, and faith community, among others.

Daily I thank and praise God for the options He’s given us to stay in touch with each other over the phone and online.

Sharing God’s Work and His Love Through Zoom

In the past year and a half, I have been holding spiritual small group book studies at my home with ladies from my parish community. The fellowship and study has borne much fruit through friendships made, increased spiritual growth and renewed trust in God.

Since the stay-at-home orders have been put in place, we have continued these small groups over Zoom. While it’s not quite the same as being with each other in person, we always leave our meetings feeling renewed and grateful for the connection and ability to share how God is working in our lives.

For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

Matthew 18:20

Through prayerful discernment, I have felt God calling me to open up this opportunity to anyone who is interested and has the time available to participate in an online spiritual book study.

The Story of a Soul: The Autobiography of St. Therese of Lisieux

For this book study, we will be reading the Story of a Soul: Study Edition, which includes the full text of St. Therese of Lisieux’s autobiography, as well as introductions, reflections, and discussion questions for each chapter of the text. It’s perfect for a spiritual book study!

St. Therese of Lisieux, “The Little Flower,” was a Discalced Carmelite nun who has transformed the lives of countless souls with the spiritual wisdom of her “little way of spiritual childhood.” To learn more about this beautiful soul, click here.

FAQs

If you’d like to learn more before you email Laura, here are some answers to questions you may have:

What do you do in a spiritual book study meeting?

Each time we meet online we will start with a short prayer and then discuss the chapter(s) we read that week, using reflection questions that will be emailed to everyone ahead of time.

How often will we meet?

Depending on the desires of those interested, we would either meet every week or every other week.

How long will we meet?

A typical meeting would last between 60 and 75 minutes.

What time will we meet?

That will depend on the preferences of those interested. Hopefully, there will be enough interest that we can have multiple times available.

How much will it cost?

The only cost will be the book we will be reading. Here is an Amazon link to the book we will use.

Is there a limit on how many are in the group?

We will keep the group limited to 5 or 6 members. I have found this size to be ideal, giving all members an adequate time to share during the meeting.
