The Litany of Humility

Do you want to free yourself from anxiety, the fears of rejection and failure, and the need for approval? Do you want to root out the sins of pride, jealousy, and envy that lead you to judge yourself and others?

The Litany of Humility is a powerful prayer that when prayed fervently and frequently, will lead you to a life of abundant gratitude, a true spirit of humility, and a heart transformed by the merciful and healing love of God.

My Testimony

I struggle a great deal with the sins of pride, jealously, and envy. While these sins are products of old, deep emotional wounds, they are sins, nonetheless. They are also sins that are correlated with anxiety, depression, and the need to be perfect.

These create interference in my relationship with God by making my love for Him lukewarm and, at times, even ungrateful. They create a hardness in my heart that does not allow me to see others as the precious children of God they are.

I’ve also noticed that when I am prideful and jealous of others, my levels of anxiety, depression, and perfectionism increase. I realize then that I am constantly seeking to gain the approval of others, comparing myself to others, and putting the focus on myself and what I lack.

Instead, my focus should always be on Jesus and thanking Him for His abundant mercy and the many blessings He continues to bestow on me. When I put my focus here, I am able to experience God’s love for myself and His love for others. I am able to truly be at peace.

While lamenting on my struggle with these sins to a priest once during confession, he recommended to me the Litany of Humility. When I pray this prayer regularly, it has a powerful effect on rooting out these deadly sins of pride, jealously, and envy, thereby decreasing the anxiety and depression I experience from these sins.

While it can be painful to pray, this powerful prayer can truly transform a heart into one that knows its worth in God’s eyes and is grateful for its many blessings. A heart that develops a gentle, tender love for others, desiring only their good. A heart that lives in God’s peace.

Pray this prayer daily, with intention and surrender to His will, and be prepared to have your heart transformed.

The Litany of Humility

O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, hear me.
From the desire of being esteemed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being loved, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being extolled, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being honored, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being praised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being preferred to others, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being consulted, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being approved, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being humiliated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being despised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of suffering rebukes, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being calumniated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being forgotten, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being ridiculed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being wronged, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being suspected, Deliver me, Jesus.
That others may be loved more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be esteemed more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That, in the opinion of the world, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
others may increase and I may decrease, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be chosen and I set aside, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be praised and I unnoticed, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be preferred to me in everything, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may become holier than I, provided that I may become as holy as I should, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
